Black and white (ink and pencil style) illustration of 19/100,000,000 Jingdezhen ceramic sunflower seeds of varying shapes and patterning, seen from a bird’s eye view, scattered against a white background.
A hairline crack runs underneath them, like an unfinished rail network.
This is basically fanart of gallery art. I drew it from a photograph I took in 2010 on the opening weekend of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds installation in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. I was one of the few who visited in the first couple of days and was able to wander around and sit on the giant work as intended, before they cordoned it off due to Health & Safety concerns about ceramic dust. Ai Weiwei also said that he expected people to steal them. Again, I was one of the few visitors who would have been able to do this.
